buzz words.

For the past month I have been working with a group on curating a hypothetical exhibition as part of  a project for my grad program. Here are two artists (out of nine) from our exhibition, Consume THIS! Excess, Infatuation and the Entertainment Industry.

The Shortlist for the Turner Prize has just been announced and I was pleased to see David Shrigley’s name on it. I am particularly fond of his nature-interventions but be sure to check out more of his work on his website below. fallen_tree

Street by James Nares is currently on view at The Met. This clip only provides a small glimpse of the magic, intrigue and personality that the artwork possesses. I never thought watching a stranger do something as mundane as typing a text or carrying groceries could ever be so captivating or nuanced, but Nares in a span of a week in 2011, manages to perfectly encapsulate the diverse fabric of people that make up New York City, and makes every moment just as dramatic as the next. In his own words, “I wanted the film to be about people. All it needed were magical moments, and there are enough of those happening every moment of any given day.”  This piece is a must see.

Death Star and the Mayans.

I saw this piece by Ulises Figueroa at the Monterrey Biennial and although it’s not the most serious or deeply thought-provoking work, it was probably the most entertaining and engaging piece at the exhibition. We all crowded around it for a solid ten minutes pointing out the various figurines and pop-culture references, laughing at the newly acquired knowledge that when we see Jabba the Hut.. the end is probably near. Hope you enjoy it as much as I do.

Classic Tuesdays

I went to the Jonas Mekas exhibition at MUAC  in Mexico City. The films, photographs and poetry  were so mesmerizing I had to share. His films are stunning, his words- moving.

“These are not memories. These are real – every detail you see in the films is real – memories are gone but the images are here and they are real, right there in front of your eyes – and I like it! I like what I see!’Jonas Mekas,  Artist Website Here.

My site was actually on auto-pilot last week as I was in Mexico City visiting ZONA MACO Art Fair. It was an amazing trip full of art, culture and mangos. There will be a couple more posts of all the art I saw, but for now here is a taste of my adventures down south.

Wonder Pop

I was terribly sick all last week so when on Friday I finally started feeling like myself again, I headed straight to the Met for Friday Late Nights. With no agenda but to spend some time with art and civilization, I stumbled into a William Eggleston exhibition that I didn’t know about. Although I have no idea how I hadn’t heard about it sooner (seeing how he is my favorite color photographer and all), it was an incredible surprise. After days spent in bed delirious feeling so grey, Eggleston’s vibrant photographs filled my evening with color at last.

be heard.

I made it back to the city just in time to see the last day of Nick Cave’s public art piece ‘Heard’ at Grand Central Station. I wasn’t in the most optimal viewing location but through the cracks of the crowd I witnessed more than a dozen colorful horses  gallop and dance through the hall, transforming a location of bustling transition into a spectacle of playful wonder.
