Two Way Monologue

I saw one of my favorite musicians, Sondre Lerche at the Bowery Ballroom this week. The concert was extra special.. not only was it his 30th birthday but it was also the kickoff show for his Fall tour. He played pretty much anything that was shouted out from the audience and all of my favorite songs. There was one moment in the show when he asked the entire two story room to be quiet as he stepped away from the mic, with just his acoustic guitar he beautifully belted My Hands are Shaking.. it was a moment of magic that I happened to get on video. If you’ve never listened to Sondre Lerche, this is as good of an introduction as any!

I am out for my first Friday night of Gallery openings in the city!

music that saves you, when you’re not so sure you’ll survive

For those of you that have been around here since the beginning.. you know this blog used to be named JAQsmannequin after my muse and all-time favorite singer, Andrew McMahon from the band Jack’s Mannequin. I have a tattoo of the bands logo behind my right ear, a bright blue asterisk that represents everyone traveling on separate paths but all being connected by love. I have been to exactly 20 Jack’s Mannequin concerts. I belted the lyrics to “Everything In Transit”, swayed with the crowd and felt just as invincible being 24 as I did when I was 17.  When Andrew McMahon got cancer, I wore his orange “11:11 AM” cancer bracelet every single day for two years until it was so thin and faded it ripped in half. Jack’s Mannequin was as much apart of my awkward adolescence angst as the camera around my neck. Probably even more. So I guess that’s why I take their break-up announcement so personally.  Jack’s Mannequin gave me more than a lullaby to handle the confusion, they gave me something to believe in.

I am lucky. I did not choose this life. It chose me. It’s strange like that; not picking my path, but rather easing into the water and letting it carry me where it will. Yes, there will be nights where I feel like my destiny is at my fingertips and there will be nights I wish the lights were off and I could just make these sounds in the dark. Still, I will always be there, wherever there might be, staring into blackness hoping the blackness stares back at me.- Andrew McMahon

I used to talk about Jack’s Mannequin ALOT on here.. check out some past posts if you’re curious. here & here & here

what I did

I wasted a lot of time looking at this list of the 20 best artist websites. (I still think Cory Arcangel deserves a spot)

I think this crazy opportunity to have work shown on a jumbo screen in NYC through Art Takes Time Square is pretty cool.

This article about a collector sueing William Eggleston for re-printing editions of his old photographs brings up some interesting ideas about photography.

I wish I could see the Mark Rothko inspired play RED featuring Jonathon Groff in LA this spring.

This assistant ‘s account of working on Damien HIrst’s notorious Spot paintings, makes me hate him as an artist even more.

I have fallen more in love with FlakPhoto.com with the new addition of The Collection (seriously, photo heaven)

I am amazed by Doug Aitken’s Song 1, projected on the entire rotunda building of the Hirschhorn…

I can’t wait to go see Glen Ligons’ traveling retrospective America  at the Fort Worth Modern this week.

and I finally watched the beautiful music video to a song that means the world to me, and almost cried.

Sh*t Photographers Say

I know there’s one of these videos for practically everything these days, but this one makes me laugh mostly because I say at least 98% of these.

My favorites? Ugh, this is too magenta, I only  shoot film There’s dust everywhere! Also I think most photographers have done the whole cliche tree bark shot. What photo jargon are you most guilty of?

Also, since we are on the subject (haha) check out my new re-designed website HERE
